Thanksgiving For 2: A Live Blog Post From Start To Finish
I am writing a live blog post of my Thanksgiving. That means, as I do stuff, I blog it with a time stamp next to it. After my Thanksgiving is done, I publish the post and you can read it along with my dad’s point of view on Philaahzophy. So, here gos:
Wednesday 11/26/08
10:36P.M. : We just got back from Safeway where we bought all the ingredients (hopefully) for my dad’s and my
Thanksgiving for 2, (The 2 being me and him) We had so many groceries, Rover could barely hold them all! OK, we didn’t have THAT many, but Dad is used to shopping for 1 or 2 and you need ALOT of groceries for Thanksgiving, even if only for 2, so he is surprised. Our dinner will consist of Turkey, Stuffing, and Mashed Potatoes. Yum!

Right now, we have to make the broth that the turkey will soak in fr 6 hours.I’m not sure how (and either is he) so he is printing out the recipe and instructions. Oh dang it! We just found out we need over a cup of salt, and only half half a cup! Oh well. We can borrow our roommate Jim’s salt.
11:15 PM
Right now I’m chopping an onion for our broth/brine that the turkey soaks in. It’s so sad! Just joking. We mixed all our ingredients in a pot. We didn’t have a big enough pot for the gallon of apple cider and other ingredients so we split in half and will make it twice. Now Dad is mixing the Brine mixture and I am typing. So far, OK.
11:28pm Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. Shoot. SHOOT! We just figured out our turkey pan won’t hold a gallon of liquid and a turkey. What are we gonna do? That is the deepest pan the store had. SHOOT!
11:52PM Well, the turkey pan also had a HOLE in it, so the liquid was flowing out. Now we can’t use it at all!
But, I have a solution! At my mom’s house, we have a big blue pot we use for spaghetti. It is very big, and I’m pretty sure it will hold a gallon of liquid and fully submerge our turkey! It has a lid to! I think we can fix this catastrophe. YEAH! Meanwhile, half the liquid is cooling in a bowl and the other half in a pot.
Thursday 11/27/08 Thanksgiving

10:03AM We just got back from my mom’s house where we got to pot and other things we might need. Dad poured the brine into the big pot, filling it a little over half way. Then he opened the turkey and put it in. IT FITS! YEAH! This might work, although we still have nothing to cook the turkey in…

11:53AM We just finished eating breakfast and watching TV and are officially up for the day! We had english muffins toasted with peanut butter, for breakfast, and watched two episodes of Doctor Who. Now we are going to start cooking and stuff. First, I have to peel my potatoes for mashed potatoes. SHOULD BE quick and easy, but we’ll see…

12:25PM I just talked to Gramalu about Thanksgiving. She will have company over so she was cooking at the same time. Well, the potatoes are all peeled and almost all chopped. I will boil them next. Be right back.
12:34PM Yes! So far, the potatoes have caused no problems. Yeah! They are boiling and dad peeled the apple for the stuffing and is now preparing the rest of ingredients for stuffing.
1:50PM OK, The potatoes finished boiling and were all soft. I drained them and put them inn a bowl. With a metal spatula, I smushed and mashed them. I added an eighth cup of milk and mixed, and then another eighth cup and did the same until 1 had a quarter of milk. I slowly added salt, pepper, and butter until it tasted good, and put it away.
Dad almost finished the stuffing mix, and we went to Safeway. We got a new turkey pan, some more salt, a thermometer, sandwiches for lunch, and a can of chicken broth because we were 2 ounces short. Now we are finishing the stuffing mixture,
and putting it in the oven for 12 min.
2:16PM We just got all the stuffing stuff and made the broth, mixing everything (now cooked and prepared) in a big bowl. At the moment it is soaking. We rushed during the process, chopping, cooking, baking, etc. I’m trying to find time to eat…
4:03PM We just took a break to watch 2 episodes of Doctor Who, but now it’s back to work! The turkey has been soaking for 6 hours now, so its time to COOK! We are gonna make a bed of veggies, and but the turkey in. Here gos.
4:40PM We put the turkey in the pan and were all ready, when I realized it was the wrong pan! We quickly changed to the holeless pan, and put the turkey in the oven, setting the timer for 45min. Right now we are debating when to put the stuffing in. We cleaned up a little and are now waiting.

5:24PM We out the stuffing in over the turkey but the turkey is turning blackish on top. I guess we put to much butter on that part. It’s not black anymore. Now it’s brown. It looks good but the thermometer is not at 160 yet so we put it in for another 10 min, checking in between. When we pull the turkey out, we will put the stuffing down for a few more minutes
while I warm up the mashed potatoes and the turkey cools.
7:39PM MMMMMM! Dinner came out and we ate while watching another episode of Doctor Who. It was delicious! Especially the stuffing! So good! It all tasted like it went together. I think that’s because of the apple. The Martinelli’s sparkling apple cider was also really good and tied together well. I liked it! After we ate, we had to clean. But it wasn’t that bad. It took less than 30 min. and we washed all the dishes also. Overall, I think Thangsgiving was a success. We ate everything we made, never felt the need to call Pizza Hut, and only had one injury. (Dad burnt his finger) A nice holiday.

The turkey coma is finally wearing off, the last of the leftovers have been eaten, and with retrospect I can clearly say this was the best Thanksgiving I’ve ever had. Thank you Zaira for making my first attempt at a Thanksgiving dinner so pleasurable!
